After starring in such films as Faster and Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson will return to the family friendly genre. According to Heat Vision, the actor will join Josh Hutcherson in the sequel to 2008′s Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brendan Fraser, who headlined the previous film won’t be returning and the studio has hired Johnson to takeover as the lead.

The new film is called Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which is loosely based on the Jules Vernes book of the same name. In the film, “Johnson will play the boyfriend of Hutcherson’s mom, who Hutcherson is forced to bring on a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather.” Three other new characters will also be introduced, and they expect to cast them within the next few weeks.

Are we the only ones having flashbacks of Johnson in Race to Witch Mountain? The stories are different, and so are the characters but it all seems so familiar. Like it’s predecessor, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island will also be shot and distributed in 3D. The film is a New Line production.

What do you think of Johnson joining the cast of Journey 2? Do you think Fraser should return?
