Over the weekend, the Dimension Films’ thriller Piranha 3D opened at number 6 at the box office grossing 10 million dollars.  For most movies that amount would definitely NOT warrant a sequel, but this film is a special case. According to the studio, Piranha 3D 2 is in development and there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

Dimension just sent out a press statement expressing their excitement about the first film’s success and their eagerness to shoot another. Here’s a bit of what they said:

After earning rave reviews from top critics, wild cheers from audiences around the country, and $10 million in its opening weekend box office, Dimension Films is pleased to announce that PIRANHA 3D – THE SEQUEL is in the works.

PIRANHA 3D producer Mark Canton stated, “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving PIRANHA 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

Wow. Well, here’s what you have to look at. The production budget was $24 million and they almost made half of that back during the opening weekend. Also, [Spoiler Alert] in the film they leave you with a major cliff hanger letting you know that there’s more to come. Therefore, this really shouldn’t be a shock to anybody.

Even though the film as a whole didn’t blow me away its stars Steven R. McQueen and Elisabeth Shue played their roles straight and actually turned in decent performances. Beyond that, it was nothing more than a semi-pornographic thriller with crappy special effects.

What do you think of Piranha 3D having a sequel? Will you watch the film?
