Earlier this week, we brought you an update on Maggie Gyllenhaal’s developing film Hysteria. The movie has an unconventional premise, which centers on the invention of the vibrator. As in the device you can find in your local sex shop (yep, they’re going there people). Apparently, there’s an interesting story to tell of how it came to be and according to Variety, Hugh Dancy has signed on to play the man who started it all.
Regarding the plot of Hysteria, Gyllenhall said:
I play a firecracker whose father is a doctor who is in the business of curing hysterical women. He cures them basically by getting them off and that actually happened. I end up having a sort of unexpected love affair with this guy who works for him, and who by mistake invents the vibrator.
According to the trade, Dancy will play the love interest and Jonathan Pryce will play Gyllenhaal’s father. The film will be directed by Tanya Wexler with a script written by Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer.
I can actually see Dancy in this part because he’s good at playing characters who have specific intentions that always go in another direction. He also has an innocent, slightly aloof look about him, which means he’s the last person you’d think would invent such a device — I like that.
What do you think of Dancy joining the cast of Hysteria?
