It’s official, Battleship has become Transformers on water. Not because it’s also based on a Hasbro toy but because of its casting. Transformers 3 has been the target of a lot of negative press because of Michael Bay’s decision to hire a model as opposed to an experienced actress to play the film’s female lead, and now Battleship‘s following in its footsteps. According to Latino Review, Sports Illustrated model Brooklyn Decker aka Mrs. Andy Roddick has been cast in the film.

The Battleship roster already includes Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, and Rihanna — yes, the singer Rihanna. The film will take place across the seas, over the skies and land in a battle for planet survival against a superior force. Kitsch stars as a naval officer who leads the fight and Skarsgard plays his brother. Decker has signed on to play a woman named “Sam.” We don’t know what she brings to the table besides that but we’re assuming she’ll be a love interest for one of the brothers.

Why is it that director Peter Berg has taken it upon himself to pick novice actors to play the female roles? What’s up with that? It gives us the idea that the women are just going to be eye candy because if he wanted something more he would have cast actresses with experience. There’s nothing wrong with giving newcomers their big break but something isn’t adding up here. Both Skarsgard and Kitsch have appeared on established television shows and several films, but Rihanna and Decker — not so much.

What do you think of Decker joining the cast of Battleship?
