Hold on to your futuristic helmets, Karl Urban has just been cast as the new Judge Dredd. He’s the cop with a huge gun and an obsession with the law who was previously played by Sylvester Stallone in the nineties movie that we’d all like to forget but can’t. According to Empire, another adaptation is in the works and Urban has been confirmed to play the title character.

Dredd producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich recently spoke about their vision for the new film and revealed the actor’s involvement.

“Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real. There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd.

They went on to say that they plan on shooting in Johannesburg and the film will be directed by Pete Travis. They’re currently sifting through ideas for the plot, but they don’t think it will be based on one specific story from the comic. Urban is currently on a roll with all these sci-fi fantasy films, he’s the new Bones in Star Trek, he plays the bad guy in the upcoming Priest adaptation, and now he’s the judge, jury, and executioner in the new Dredd film. Nice!

Ok, so let’s hear it. What do you think of Urban as Dredd?!
