Reese Witherspoon wants to stick with a formula that works. According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, the actress is in negotiations with Fox 2000 to star in a biopic based on the life and career of singer/actress Peggy Lee. The last time we saw Witherspoon star in a period piece where she got to flex her vocals it was in 2005 for Walk the Line, and she walked home with an Academy Award.
Witherspoon will not only star in the film but she’ll also serve as one of its producers. She picked up the story rights from Lee’s estate and has been working hard to bring it to the big screen. She’s enlisted the help of acclaimed screenwriter and director Nora Ephron to pen the screenplay and helm the film.
The biopic will “depict the highs and lows of Lee’s personal life and career, which spanned nearly seven decades in music and film.” When Witherspoon played June Carter Cash, she was the rock to Joaquin Phoenix’s rebellious Johnny Cash. This time she’ll be the headliner of the film and will bear the brunt of the troubling scenes. Can’t wait!
What do you think of Witherspoon playing Peggy Lee? Do you think she can pull it off?
