Who hasn’t at one point or another wanted to be Oprah Winfrey? She’s successful in every aspect of the word and consistently tops the richest and most powerful lists each year. Despite her accolades, her life hasn’t been easy and for the most part she’s told the free world about her abusive childhood, growing up in poverty and her teenage pregnancy. According to THR, Hollywood wants more, they want to produce a TV film based on the unofficial biography of the star by Kitty Kelley.
Who would dare play Oprah in a film without her blessing? Perhaps, an actress who needs money and some quick recognition? The trade is reporting that producer Larry A. Thompson plans on a two or four hour Winfrey biopic that’s expected to hit the small screen in September of 2011. He’s already optioned it for six figures and is awaiting the final details. He’s previously produced television films based on Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and Sonny and Cher.
He wouldn’t disclose the networks he’s shopping the film to but claims they’re some heavy hitters. Winfrey’s company Harpo Productions refused to give a comment regarding the host’s feelings on the matter.
Who still watches made for TV movies anymore? Isn’t it a dying subgenre that’s mostly been relayed to cable networks like Lifetime and HBO when they’re hungry for award recognition?
