The Coen Brothers are hard at work on their remake of True Grit and the first on set photos have been released. They feature Oscar winner Jeff Bridges dressed in full costume as Marshal “Rooster” Reuben J. Cogburn, the role originally played by John Wayne in the 1969 version. Check out Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross below…

The story of True Grit will center on a U.S. Marshal (Bridges), his sidekick (Matt Damon), and a 14 year old girl named Mattie (Steinfeld) who tags along as they try and track down her father’s killer. The original film’s point of view was taken from that of  Cogburn, while the Coen’s remake we will follow the vantage point of the young girl. The cast also includes Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper in supporting roles. The film is scheduled for release on December 25, 2010 just in time for Oscar season.

I can’t wait to see what the rest of the cast looks like. Bridges definitely embodies the rough exterior that Wayne had in the original and Steinfeld looks like she could be a real spitfire when the camera’s start rolling. This is one of my must-see films of the year.

What do you think of the first photos of Bridges as Cogburn and Steinfeld as Ross in True Grit?
