When it’s all said and done the Twilight Saga Eclipse will have a lot to show for itself in terms of its box office gross. The film already broke the record for having the highest midnight opening with 30 million dollars and now its earned another substantial amount in its first 24 hours. According to Coming Soon, Eclipse raked in $68.5 million, but still didn’t manage to beat its predecessor.
The Twilight Saga New Moon earned $72.7 million in its first day, which means Eclipse falls short but is still impressive. If the estimate is accurate, the sequel will hold on to the number 2 spot for the highest single day gross knocking 2008′s The Dark Knight down to 3 with its $67.2 million. It does however hold the number one spot for the biggest Wednesday opening, which was previously held by Transformers Revenge of The Fallen ($62 million).
The actual production of Eclipse cost Summit Entertainment $68 million and they’ve easily earned that back. Now they have to retrieve the marketing costs, and eventually a profit after that. Something tells us that the competition this week doesn’t stand a chance against these vampires, werewolves, and their Twihard fanbase.
What do you think of Eclipse’s success? How much do you think it will make over the holiday weekend?
