After weeks of speculation and false reports the new Peter Parker aka Spider-Man has been cast. According to a press release sent out by Sony Pictures, British actor Andrew Garfield can officially add webslinger to his resume. Garfield is a talented actor and has appeared in several films including The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and David Fincher‘s upcoming Facebook movie, The Social Network. His casting isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I thought they were going for a younger Parker?

Here’s the official announcement:

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 1, 2010 – After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012.  The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt.  Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

When asked about his decision to pick Garfield over the rest of the candidates director Marc Webb stated,

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Garfield is beyond talented and he deserves this big break but the studio made a huge fuss about having the reboot focus on an angst-ridden teen. Garfield is 26, I thought they weren’t trying to pull another Tobey Maguire? Either way congrats to him and now on to our search for Mary Jane!

What do you think of the new Spider-Man?
