Whenever a CGI creature is one of the central characters in a film there’s only man capable of bringing them to life — Andy Serkis! The actor who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings has landed a new gig as the “main ape” in the Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes. According to 20th Century Fox, he’s joining the cast that currently includes James Franco, Freida Pinto, and John Lithgow.

In the Planet of the Apes prequel, Franco stars as a young scientist who’s working on a cure for Alzheimer’s disease that’s being tested on apes. His main subject is a primate named Caesar who becomes highly evolved at a fast pace and in order to protect him from further testing the scientist moves him into his home.

Serkis will once again work with Weta Digital to do performance capture for the character of Caesar. Get ready for some off the wall monkey action to come from the actor who knows a thing or two about working in a blue suit with tiny balls on it (get your mind out of the gutter).

What do you think of Andy Serkis playing Caesar the monkey in Rise of the Apes?
