Late last year it was announced that Shawn Levy would direct a futuristic tale about human, robot boxers, with Hugh Jackman as the lead. The film is called Real Steel and the first production photos of Jackman on set were just released earlier this month. Now Pajiba is reporting that Mattel and Mandeville Films are developing a movie that’s very similar, if not the same, based on the inspiration behind Real Steel….the Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em toys! Say what?
When discussing the plot of Real Steel, the term ‘rock ‘em, sock ‘em’ was used to describe what the robotic-characters would look like, so it’s strange that a studio would announce the development of this film without having financial proof that Real Steel will even succeed at the box office.
But let’s remember, even if a movie goes through the development process, as Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em is, it doesn’t mean it will ever hit the big screen — unless a super-director is already attached.
Currently there’s talk that Wolfgang Petersen will be directing this “bad idea.” So with him on board it’s pretty certain that this movie will get made. Granted, his recent films haven’t been that spectacular but surely he’s better than this “story of a part human, part robot hybrid” The project isn’t set in stone and hopefully it never will be because we already have Transformers to deal with.
What do you think? Who do you want to see, Rock’em Sock’em or Real Steel?
