Last May, it was announced that Cameron Crowe would direct a feature adaptation of the Benjamin Mee memoir, We Bought a Zoo. It’s based on a true story that features plenty of drama and obstacles being thrown in the man’s way. According to Variety, Matt Damon is in talks to play the author.

We Bought a Zoo tells the story of how Mee and his family used their life savings to buy a dilapidated zoo and filled it with 200 exotic animals facing destruction on the English countryside. Mee along with his children had to balance caring for his wife, who was dying of brain cancer, while dealing with escaped tigers, raising endangered animals, working with an eclectic skeleton crew and readying the zoo for a reopening.

When the film was first announced Damon was named as one of the top contenders for the role of Mee. At the time, his biggest competition was Ben Stiller and over a month later we see who came out on top.

The screenplay for We Bought a Zoo was written by Aline Brosh McKenna and the film will be released by 20th Century Fox.
