The first trailer has been released for the Tony Goldwyn directed film Conviction, which stars Sam Rockwell and two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank. In the film they both bring their A-game along with really thick New England accents. The actors tackle some meaty and emotional material in what looks like an obvious awards season contender. Check it out…
Conviction is the true story of a devoted sister and her multiple attempts to free her brother from a life prison sentence. Betty Anne Waters’ (Swank) older brother Kenny (Rockwell) is arrested for murder and sentenced to life in 1983, Betty Anne, a Massachusetts wife and mother of two, dedicates her life to overturning the murder conviction. Convinced that her brother is innocent, Betty Anne puts herself through high school, college and, finally, law school in an 18 year quest to free Kenny.
With the help of best friend Abra Rice (Minnie Driver), Betty Anne pours through suspicious evidence mounted by small town cop Nancy Taylor (Melissa Leo), meticulously retracing the steps that led to Kenny’s arrest. Belief in her brother – and her quest for the truth – pushes Betty Anne and her team to uncover the facts and utilize DNA evidence with the hope of exonerating Kenny.
The performances in this film look stellar and the fact that it’s based on a true story makes them even more heartbreaking. Hopefully, this turns into something that will get Rockwell some much deserved recognition, especially after he got the shaft last year for Moon. I’m still bitter over that!
Conviction opens this fall on October 15th in limited release.
