Over the past few months we’ve seen a couple behind the scenes photos from the set of The Smurfs but nothing official. Our only legit exposure was a black and white scan of a poster highlighting a character named “Smurfy.” Over at USA Today, they recently ran a photo that features three of the title characters against the backdrop of New York City where the film’s set.
In The Smurfs, the forest creatures stumble upon a magic portal that transports them to modern day New York City (Central Park). They run into a married couple played by Neil Patrick Harris and “Glee’s” Jayma Mays and beg them for help to escape the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) who’s trying to capture them so they can be used in his magic.
Speaking of Gargamel, Azaria looks like a spitting image of the cartoon character. Kudos to the makeup department because they really turned him into that guy, which seemed like an impossible feat at the beginning. If you haven’t already seen the on-set photos of the actor, you should check them out. He looks great!
The film is based on the popular Hanna-Barbera series that centered on a group of little blue men who wore white pants and hats and lived in a happy forest without a care in the world. Gargamel was their sworn enemy who tried to ruin their lives one outlandish scheme at a time.
What do you think of the first official photo from The Smurfs?
