Until Christopher Nolan puts out an official press release announcing the cast of Batman 3, we’ll have to sit and suffer through more rumors and constant speculation. One actor whose name keeps popping up in the whirlwind of lies is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who co-stars in Nolan’s latest film Inception. According to a report from Hollywood Life, Levitt is the director’s first pick to play The Riddler in the next Batman.

First off, Levitt was previously rumored to be a possible replacement for Heath Ledger’s Joker, after the character’s fate in The Dark Knight was left open ended. But that story was nipped in the bud when Nolan said he wouldn’t feel comfortable recasting the role. Shortly after the release of the film there was speculation that The Riddler would pop up as one of the villains in the sequel and Eddie Murphy was named as a possible candidate.

Fast forward two years later and Levitt has been mentioned as a “front runner” to play the character thanks to his work on Inception.

“Chris really dug Joseph [as an actor],” a source close to the director tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “There was a joke at first between them [on the set of Inception] that Joseph wanted to read for Batman 3 and things heated up as filming continued.”

The last time The Riddler was seen on screen he was played by Jim Carrey in 1995′s Batman Forever. Levitt is a great actor and it wouldn’t be surprising if he did appear in another Nolan film in the future but it might not be Batman. The screenplay is still being written and Nolan doesn’t seem like the type to jump into casting without having a story locked.

Do you think Joseph Gordon-Levitt would make a good Riddler?
