Idris Elba has been making his rounds on the big screen with supporting parts in Obsessed, RocknRolla, and most recently The Losers. While awaiting the release of his new film Takers, he’s decided to return to his television roots. For those of you who don’t know, he was a regular on the awesome HBO series “The Wire” and appeared on NBC’s “The Office.” According to a report from EW, the British actor has signed on to star in the upcoming Showtime series “The Big C” alongside Laura Linney.

“The Big C,” is a dark half an hour comedy about a suburban housewife who’s trying to reclaim her life after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Linney will star as the lead character Cathy, Gabourey Sidibe will play one of her smart alecky students, and Oliver Platt will star as her immature, but well-meaning husband. Elba’s character will be a potential love interest for Cathy who’ll appear in at least 4 episodes this season (sounds like trouble in paradise).

Across the pond Elba has been receiving rave reviews for his work in a six part miniseries entitled “Luther.” He plays the title character, a brilliant but self-destructive detective who strikes up an odd relationship with a killer played by Ruth Wilson. It already aired overseas and is scheduled to debut in the U.S. later this year. As for “The Big C,” it will premiere on August 16, 2010.
