Dinner for Schmucks Delayed – Runs from Salt, Inception
By Krystal Clark
If you’ve been following the marketing campaign for Inception, you know it’s the must see film of the summer. It’s directed by Christopher Nolan and is filled with a cast of talented actors led by Leonardo DiCaprio. With that type of star power it’s no surprise that the competition is shaking in their boots. According to Box Office Mojo, the first casualty to fall even before its release is Jay Roach’s Dinner for Schmucks…
Dinner for Schmucks was originally scheduled to hit theaters on July 23rd the same weekend as Angelina Jolie’s Salt. Even though both films have a specific target audience, DreamWorks must have felt a little nervous going up against the actress’ fanbase. Not only is that a factor but the heavy presence of Inception from the previous week could also have an effect on its gross. Therefore, they’ve decided to push the film back to July 30th.
The two week difference between Schmucks and Nolan’s latest is a smart decision on the studio’s part. Inception has the industry shook, even Disney moved The Sorcerer’s Apprentice up to July 14th so it wouldn’t have to go head to head with it on the 16th.
If you think about it, all these movies have a potential to fail. The marketing for Salt has been crap, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice looks cheap and corny, and Dinner for Schmucks has that over the top slapstick vibe. You never know with fickle summer audiences. Do you think all these “precautions” are really necessary.
Do you think DreamWorks made the right decision by delaying Schmucks? What film are you the most excited to see out of this bunch?
