Donald Glover to Play New Spider-Man?

If you’re a fan of NBC’s freshman series “Community” or Derrick Comedy’s Mystery Team, you’ve probably been exposed to the talent of Donald Glover. The young actor and writer has a huge online following and his fans are petitioning for him to be considered for the coveted role of Peter Parker in Sony’s rebooted Spider-Man franchise. Yep, Spider-Man!
Last week, a list of 5 Peter Parker contenders surfaced that included Jamie Bell, Andrew Garfield, Josh Hutcherson, Alden Ehrenreich, and Frank Dillane. Not to take away from the talent of the young men but a minor backlash sprung up about their possible casting. Over on i09, Marc Bernardin wrote an article entitled, “The last thing Spider-Man should be is another white guy.” This sparked a debate about whether or not the old school look of Parker should be changed and if so who should play him? Enter Donald Glover.
Loading ...In true Betty White fashion, a Facebook campaign has sprung up and its sole purpose is to get Glover into those tights! So far almost 5,000 people have become fans of the page and the actor himself responded to the hype on his Twitter stating, “Some people are mistaken. I don’t want to just be given the role. I want to be able to audition. I truly love Spider-Man.”
I’m down with shaking up the system but I think that making Spider-Man an African-American is easier said than done. He along with Superman and Batman are pretty much set in stone in terms of their look and appeal. This isn’t Nick Fury we’re talking about here. If enough people can rally together and make this happen I’d be more than interested in seeing the finished product but it’s a long shot. If you want it to happen, you’ve got to keep the dream alive.

having a black spiderman makes as much sense as having a white cast in goodtimes. Don't screw up a great comic book character.

Spiderman has already been a black man. Todd McFarlane wrote an episode where Spiderman revealed himself and he was black when he worked at Marvel. Of course we all know he went on to create Spawn who is a black superhero. Spiderman should stay white just like the original and Spawn should stay black just like the original. The original formula works and sells so don't screw it up and don't try to be political about it. Spawn is my favorite superhero and it would be stupid to cast him as a white guy and yes, I am white. But that is not Spawn.
We have enough political correctness shoved in our face as it is. Leave fantasy the way it is and let us escape our realities and enjoy ourselves for a couple of hours while we enjoy the movie… and remember there is no such thing as Spiderman anyways…

I like Donald Glover as a comedian, but there is no way that I would ever see a Spider-man portrayed by anyone other than a white guy. I'm not being racist, I'm saying that the content needs to stay true to it's origin. On that note…stop making spidey a whiny little biotch and start making him the smart-mouthed kid/adult that he's suppose to be.

Sure, If they wanna throw the complete Spider-Man franchise in the gutter. For 40+ years Peter Parker has been white, so why change it? Bad Idea!

I just read an article about people having a hissy fit because they did not use and Asian for “The Last Air Bender,” or a Persian for “Prince of Persia.” Yet somehow it’s ok to make an Italian character a black kid for “The Karate Kid,” and make Spiderman black. Lame. Don’t try and be trendy keep him who he is a nerdy white kid.
