After a long and strenuous battle with prostate cancer, Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper passed away Saturday morning at the age of 74. The actor was known for his unconventional roles and independent spirit that was showcased through his love of film, art, and photography.
According to People, he died at 9 am with his family and close friends at his side in his Los Angeles home. Hopper had a larger than life career but he came from humble beginnings in Dodge City, Kansas. He landed his first major film role at the tender age of 19 and found himself acting opposite another rising star, James Dean.
Hopper would go on to work with Dean in his final film Giant, which also starred Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. After success in the fifties and sixties he sparked a new independent film movement with the production of his cult classic Easy Rider, which featured him as its star and director alongside Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.
