Apparently, when Dominic Cooper grows up he’s going to look just like John Slattery from “Mad Men.” The British actor recently told Salon, that he would appear in Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger as Howard Stark aka Tony’s papa. This confirms what we learned from Iron Man 2: Stark was one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D. and was involved with the original Avengers initiative.

Cooper was on hand discussing his latest feature at the Cannes Film Festival, Stephen Frears’s Tamara Drewe when he broke the news. While interviewing him, the site confirmed that he’s slated to play the elder Stark in the Joe Johnston adaptation, which would explain the actor’s previous mix up with Thor. A few months ago, Cooper was rumored to be joining the cast of the film as either Fandral the Dashing or one of the Warriors Three. He was in the Marvel camp we just had him pegged for the wrong film!

Even though he didn’t land any of those parts he must have made quite an impression on the studio because he was still given a pretty important role in the Avengers storyline. We wonder if he’ll try to do his best Slattery impression or add his own edge to the character?

Captain America: The First Avenger will hit theaters on July 22, 2011.

What do you think of Dominic Cooper playing Howard Stark in Captain America? Is he the right actor for the part?
