Ever since Marvel began making live action films based on the Iron Man comic fans have been waiting for him to battle his arch nemesis on the big screen. We’re not talking about Iron Monger or Whiplash or Justin Hammer, we’re referring to The Mandarin. With two movies under his belt director Jon Favreau confirmed to MTV that he’s looking to bring the ten ringed villain to the forefront in the third installment, Iron Man 3.

Favreau wants to see The Mandarin and Iron Man go toe to toe in the next film but he’s unsure as to how it will play out with The Avengers storyline. Iron Man 2 built a bridge to next summer’s Thor, which is being directed by Kenneth Branagh and served as a serious catalyst for the team-up movie. Even though the director wants The Mandarin to be involved in the franchise, he feels like the character’s mythological center might conflict with Iron Man’s real world vibe.

“You have to do The Mandarin. The problem with The Mandarin is, the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. He also has 10 magical rings, and it just doesn’t feel right for our thing, so it’s either tech-based or the rings are not really rings. But maybe with Thor and all those others you’ll introduce magic to that world and it won’t seem so out of place,” he said.

That’s what we were going to say. Thor sticks out like a sore thumb in comparison to every other Avengers character. Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and even Captain America all have science as the root of their super human abilities. Thor’s on a whole other level of mysticism. If the film is well received and audiences can accept his magical element as being a realistic part of the character’s lives perhaps Mandarin will finally get his shot and give Iron Man a worthy opponent.

What do you think of Jon Favreau’s thoughts on Mandarin? Could you accept the character if he was portrayed the same way in the film as he is in the comic?
