Indie darling Greta Gerwig got a big career boost when she appeared alongside Ben Stiller in this year’s Greenburg. Even though the movie wasn’t a box office success it got the actress plenty of exposure within the industry. According to Deadline, Gerwig has been tapped by Warner Bros to play the female lead opposite Russell Brand in their remake of Arthur.
The film is directed by Jason Winer (ABC’s “Modern Family“) and will center on a lovable drunk who risks his sizeable trust fund to be with a woman who makes him feel alive. Gerwig will light up Brand’s life in the same way that Liza Minnelli did for Dudley Moore in the original.
Even though 1981′s Arthur was a critical (4 Oscar nods) and cult success we’re not sure if Brand can bring the same type of charm to the film. Gerwig on the other hand sounds like a promising choice and might surprise those who doubt her comedic talent. In addition, Oscar winner Helen Mirren is also a part of the cast, which is a blessing in more ways than one. Even though we’re still skeptical about Brand at least we know he’ll be supported by two of the most talented ladies in the business.
What do you think of Gerwig starring in Arthur? Who do you think should play the leading lady in the film?
