If you enjoyed the campy vampire flick Daybreakers you’re probably fans of its directors Peter and Michael Spierig. The Australian duo is moving on from pale bloodsuckers to elf-like creatures in the long awaited sequel Power of the Dark Crystal, the follow up to Jim Henson’s 1982 film simply known as The Dark Crystal.
Back in August, Brian Henson (son of Jim) was singing the praises of the Crystal script way before a director was nailed down. And now eight months later a press release has been sent out announcing the hiring of the Spierig’s along with a brief plot synopsis.
Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the world has once again fallen into darkness, Power of the Dark Crystal follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.
We’ve never seen the first Dark Crystal movie but we’re well aware of the cult following it has. For that reason alone the Spierig’s involvement in worrisome. The reviews for Daybreakers were hit or miss and with a property of this stature they need to bring their A-game. Not just for us but for the millions of fans who actually grew up watching it.
Do you think the Spierig Brothers can successfully direct the Dark Crystal sequel? Who should have been hired for the job?
