Steven Spielberg to Direct War Horse
By Anet Hovhanesian
Steven Spielberg’s next project will be the war epic, War Horse based on the Michael Morpurgo novel of the same name. According to Variety, it will be set against the sweeping backdrop of the first World War and will chart the extraordinary friendship between a young boy and a horse who are separated during the traumatic event.
Spielberg has already extensively covered World War II with Saving Private Ryan and countless other films so now he’s ready to tackle its predecessor. The talented director knew he wanted to take on the challenge of translating the story from page to screen ever since he read the book. He stated, “Its heart and its message provide a story that can be felt in every country.”
Disney and DreamWorks will jointly release the film August 10, 2011 but that won’t be the only major movie he has debuting next year. He’s still adding the finishing touches to his 3D family film The Adventures of Tin-Tin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which he co-directed with Peter Jackson that’s scheduled for release on December 23, 2011.
What do you think? Is Spielberg the right person to take on War Horse? Who else do you think could direct the film?
