A few days ago Warner Bros announced a new partnership with IMAX to distribute several of their tentpole projects including Christopher Nolan’s Batman 3. The deal covered up to 20 films over a three year time period, which gave us an idea of when to expect the next Batman movie on the big screen. According to the studio, the bat will be back in 2012!

Warner Bros distribution chief Dan Fellman just sent out an internal email revealing Batman’s official release date as July 20, 2012. The screenplay and the story for the film are being written by David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan, while Chris is busy wrapping up production of this year’s Inception.

The timing of the release is fairly close to another superhero juggernaut’s big debut. Sony’s Spider-Man reboot will open on July 3, 2012, a few weeks before Batman hits. It will be interesting to see how Nolan’s next installment will affect the new Spidey. Both franchises have never been active at the box office during the same year, let alone the same month.

All three of the previous Spider-Man movies were released in 2002, 2004, and 2007, while Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were released in 2005 and 2008. We wouldn’t be surprising if Sony decided to change their Spider-Man date in the next few weeks.

Are you excited that Warner Bros has finally announced the release date for Batman 3?
