What in the 80s-action-packed-hell is going on in Hollywood?! We know that remakes and reboots are hot these days but why is everyone obsessed with Arnold Schwarzenneger movies all of a sudden? They’ve remade Predator, Terminator had another sh*tty sequel, Total Recall is in development, and now Commando is headed our way!
According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox has hired David Ayer to write the screenplay for their remake of the 1985 Schwarzenegger film. Ayer knows a thing or two about military-based projects thanks to his former career as a Navy Seal. He made the transition to screenwriting with the 2001 feature Training Day before moving on to Harsh Times and Street Kings.
He will put his own real-world spin on this original premise: a retired elite special forces operative sees his daughter kidnapped and is told she’ll die unless he gets on a plane and kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator.
Words like “real-world spin” worry me. The whole reason Commando was so great was because of its outlandish and almost cartoonish premise and action. It sounds like they’re trying to turn it into a gritty thriller, which wasn’t the intent of the original.
Plus, who are they going to get to play the lead character? Are they going to go through the WWE wrestling roster to see if John Cena is up for the challenge? Have any of you seen him in The Marine? That movie was horrible!
What do you think about Fox’s decision to remake Commando? Are you for or against the movie?
