Zoe Saldana on Spock Romance in Star Trek Sequel
By Krystal Clark
Zoe Saldana will be hitting the big screen this weekend with the comic adaptation The Losers, after quietly appearing in last week’s Death at a Funeral. Over the past year she’s appeared in two major blockbusters Avatar and Star Trek and even though everyone loved the romance between Jake Sully and Neytiri we’re eager to find out if Uhura and Spock will eventually get it on. Saldana seems to think something might happen…
Saldana spoke with MTV about Star Trek 2, (she expects to shoot sometime later this year) and her hopes to see more of a Spock/Uhura romance the second time around. The actress wants the story to expand on the relationship they established in the first film but she’s not 100% sure if their characters can mate according to Star Trek lore.
“It would be interesting to see what they are going to do with it,” continued Saldana. “I really hope they keep [the relationship] and continue to explore it. But at the same time too — this is coming from my mother, who is a Trekkie — I could be wrong, but I thought that Vulcans only mate every seven years. So now that the planet [Vulcan] has been extinguished, it’s kind of interesting. Can Spock mate with a non-Vulcan?”
Someone out there needs to answer her question stat! For a lot of people the Spock/Uhura pairing was one of the few problems they had with JJ Abrams reboot and they thought it was played up a little too much. Personally, it was nice to see Spock getting the girl for once in his life. On the TV show, didn’t Kirk get a new lady almost every other episode? It didn’t matter is she was white, black, green, or covered with slim he got a piece. It’s Spock’s turn.
Do you want to see more of Spock and Uhura’s romance in the sequel? What are the restrictions on Vulcan mating, inquiring minds want to know?

Obviously a Vulcan can mate with a non Vulcan..Spock is half human…

Vulcans experience "Ponn Farr" every 7 years. It's an irresistable urge to mate. That's about my average as well…

Hells yeah. Its Spock's turn.

Yep, he is. Maybe you should email her and pass along that info.

LOL!

Spock's father Sarek ,arried a human, and sometime in there they had Spock. So, why not? In this last JJ Abrahms Star Trek Sarek spoke about "keeping one's emotions under control", he implied that Vulcans DO have emotions. Interesting! What great casting…etc. I loved the movie.

Outside of Spock and Amanda, we also know that Trip and T'Pol slept together on Enterprise. T'Pol may have been a Vulcan woman and they may not have had children (save for the binary clone in Demons/Terra Prime), but they were still able to sleep together.

I'd rather see them explore the unspoken secret every trekkie knew. Sulu and Checkov were on the down low.

No. The romance made no sense. It was totally out of character for Spock. Plus, as pretty as Zoe Saldana is she could find a much better looking dude.

Spock is half human-duh. Yes Zoe Spock CAN mate with a human! And the problem of him and New Vulcan has already been resolved in Star Trek 2009-Spock Prime basically said "I got that for you man"! He took NuSpock's place on New Vulcan. I think the two of them together were pretty cute! Done right-not over done the romance can work. People are just afraid of change and new things. I'm down with it.

Spock can of course have sex with a non-Vulcan. Given his upbringing (either Spock) it would be,.Illogical,…to deny that Vulcans have needs. However,.Spock would consider (as indeed would ANY Vulcan) that SHOWING such an attraction publicly to be in EXTREAMLY poor taste. Therefore IF the storyline is handled PROPERLY it can work. But they need to consider that Vulcans in general and Spock in particular just would be very unblatent in showing it in public. THAT is my understanding of the Vulcan way.

My beef with Zoe as Uhura is that she is too damn skinny. The original Uhura filled out her sexy red uniform much better. She had boobs and butt, whereas Zoe has the pretty face and slim waist and that's it. Plus the original Uhura could sing, and even serenaded Spock once in the Enterprise cafeteria.

As an avid trekkie/trekker I have my own opinions about the most recent Star Trek film. I personally thought that it was very smart for the makers of the most recent Star Trek film to set it in an alternate reality, because if they hadn't and they changed ANYTHING from the established lore, Star Trek fans, including myself (I admit it) would have ripped it to shreds. And with the way that the previous Trek film was poorly received by both fans and critics, the franchise DEFINITELY needed a fresh start. With the help of the alterate universe, it gave the filmmakers freedom to make certain changes to make it their own film, while at the same time keeping the characters IN character enough in order to maintain the already established familiarity. While I certainly had a slew of problems with this movie, I really did enjoy it, and I'm happy that it did so well at the box office.

Seriously….did she SERIOUSLY ask if Spock can mate with a non-Vulcan? She can't be totally unaware that Spock himself is indeed half-human can she??? Or is she just referring to not knowing how the Vulcan "urge" works with the whole seven year thing? I dunno….step your game up Zoe, you're better than that.

As far as Vulcan mating goes: Yes, every 7 years all Vulcans experience the biological urge to mate, a.k.a. Pon farr. However, contrary to popular opinion, pon farr is not the only time that Vulcans mate. Every 7 years is the NECESSITY, the ritual, all that jazz – but in between Vulcans still can and do engage in sexual activity. Vulcans are not emotionless; on the contrary. They are VERY emotional creatures, volatile even, which is why they developed techniques to suppress their emotion, i.e. through meditation. It is expertly suppressed, NOT eradicated.
As for Spock: showing the violent outbursts in this most recent film; establishing where his emotional state can take him if provoked, they are clearly exploring the inner conflict Spock has with his human side and his Vulcan side. The romance that they have set up thus far – between Uhura and Spock – was not overdone in my opinion, and unlike some other TOS fans, I was okay with it. I think that the filmmakers CAN explore a different side of Spock – as long as they don't take him out of his character to do so. They just have to remember: this is an alternate reality, not an alternate person. I'm done now. ;^)

vulcans can mate pretty much whenever they wish. the pon farr ritual is just a phase, vulcans can mate just as humans do. they probably enjoy it just as much as humans, if not more on some levels. but if they were to mate, it would have to be so privately, no one would know about it. i would like to see the spock/uhura relationship to advance. its an interesting take on their relationship on TOS, and i like where its going. lets hope jj doesn't kill it.

The Spock/Uhura relationship was one of the best parts of the reboot. Of course, humans and Vulcans can mate; Spock is the product of such a mating. However, I don't think the relationship should be treated casually. I thought all the actors and characterizations were spot on and I would like more of the same.
I think more emphasis can be placed on plot development this time. I think we are ready for an upbeat approach to the surprises, wonders, adventures and difficulties involved in ensuring the future survival of humans, Vulcans, Klingons, and other assorted entities.

Zoe needs to look into TOS and really learn the characters. Then she will know that Vulcans can mate with humans. I'd like to see the romance flourish–but of course they could never show it publicly. This was done well in this film, so hopefully they will keep at it. But they do have to throw Kirk his girl too–he always has one.

I think what she meant was that his species is now endangered so shouldn't he be mating with his own kind to continue the species. Not that he isn't capable.

I don't think she was questioning whether they CAN mate but rather SHOULD they mate. True it is an alternate reality but would that put them too far off course. That is houw I read her statements anyway. As a diehard lifelong Trek fan, I loved the franchise reboot and can't wait for the next installment. Zachary Quinto is excellent as Spoke.

Spock is too strong for petty human emotions. Spock in love? Seriously? Highly illogical.

I wonder if the treacherous T'Pring survived the destruction of Vulcan. Because if she did she could cause lots of trouble! http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081213210…

According to Sarek speaking to Spock…Quote "You asked me why I married your mother., Because I loved her." un quote. Vulcans have no emotions, huh?

Great movie, I hope the sequel is good too. She isn't too skinny at all…..for a white guy! She has her own Avon perfume called Eternal Magic too.

Alternate timeline or not, Spock would never have become romantically involved with a student. Period. Now, if Uhura had been an equal such as a fellow instructor, or if the relationship developed a sequel or two from now, perhaps, but Spock, in any universe, would have found it not only illogical, but unethical to act on an attraction to a subordinate such as a student or junior officer. And he most CERTAINLY would not be making out with her on a transporter pad in front of God and everybody.

Seriously! Zoe Saldana is drop dead gorgeous. She is a naturally skinny, tall woman who is obviously very healthy and active. People who assume she is "anorexic" are clearly stupid/jealous. Would you rather her go out and get implants like Kardashian? Zoe rocks what she has with confidence. You go girl!

I agree with the others. Pon Far is not the only time that Vulcans mate. As for the human to non-human – of course they can ( otherwise Spock wouldn't exist!). But Uhura deserves more than to be a token girlfirend. She and Spock could never be a long term thing. Because without the whole Kirk/Spock/McCoy dynamic there is no Star Trek. The thing is Star Trek is about the bond these 3 have with not only each other but there psuedo family (uhura, chekov, sulu, scotty and the others). Therefore, long term the girl would be wedged out. Besides the obvious choice is Scotty not Spock. She has so much more in common with Scotty – they are both redshirts afterall.
PS Would like to see a short-term Chapel/Mccoy pairing again the more logical choice for Christine.

Well, for one thing. In the alternative timeline Spock chose to live his life more in touch with his human side. He made a choice to not "follow" the vulcan way when he left the science academy. While in the original timeline Spock did the same thing, he made a more logical choice, not an emotional one as Spock 2 did because of the insult to his mother. Spock 2-is more emotional. He has chosen a different path than Spock 1. While he continues to try and control his emotions, he has not tried as hard as Spock 1 and it shows. I like it.

uhura is not a student but a lietuent in starfleet, therefore Spock is not romatically involve with a subordinate, but a young officer.
