Oh snap, it looks like Archie Comics is finally stepping into the 21st century. According to a report from The Washington Post, the long running publishing house is gearing up to debut their first openly gay character. Let’s all let out a resounding, “it’s about time!” His name is Kevin Keller and he’ll appear in Archie’s Veronica comic as the hot new guy she tries to date but for some odd reason he’s just not interested. Hmmm, we wonder why?

Archie announced Thursday that Keller would be the latest addition to the Riverdale High student Body when he debuts in No. 202 of Veronica. He’s got blond hair, blue eyes and he looks a lot better than the rest of the riff raff floating around so naturally Veronica is attracted to him. Everyone else seems to know Keller’s deal except for her and according to Victor Gorelick, editor in chief of Archie Comics “They don’t tell Veronica — they let her stew in it for a while.”

The introduction of Keller is all a part of Archie’s plan to get with the times and modernize their comics so they can gain new fans.

“The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books,” Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in announcing the news.

It’s been a good 10 or 12 years since I’ve picked up a Veronica or Archie comic and while the animation has changed their lack of diversity has stayed the same. Riverdale has always been pretty bland, which is why it was so hard to stay interested in the characters. It’s good that they’re finally stepping it up and moving into the real world by adding someone who doesn’t fit into their traditional mold.

What do you think of Archie Comics introducing a gay character? When was the last time you read one of their comics?
