A couple of days ago we were informed that French actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey was cast in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as a beautiful mermaid and today another fresh face has joined the party. British actor Sam Claflin was the subject of a recent press release the studio sent out announcing him as the latest addition to the film.
Claflin literally has two credits on his resume and he’s just landed an epic third with Pirates of the Caribbean. In the film his character’s name is Philip and he’s described as a youthful missionary. This makes me wonder, are they going to Hell in the fourth film? Are there demons afoot? It sounds like his character will be a bit naive and corruptible and with someone like Jack Sparrow around it would be wise for him to keep his distance.
The plot for the fourth film is based on the Tim Powers novel On Stranger Tides which centered on pirates and their search for the fountain of youth. Production is scheduled to begin in June and they’ll shoot entirely on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles.
Six months ago we were still debating whether or not this movie would get made and now they’re throwing new actors at us left and right. Disney really wants to meet their deadline and their pulling out all the stops to do it. Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides will be directed by Rob Marshall and released in theaters on May 20, 2011.
Have you seen any of Sam Claflin’s work? What do you think of his casting?
