Walt Disney Pictures has announced the latest addition to the cast of their upcoming film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Her name is Astrid Bergès-Frisbey and she’s been selected to play the key role of Syrena a “beautiful and alluring mermaid.” If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering who Frisbey is and how she managed to snag a role opposite Johnny Depp. For most of her career she’s been untouched by American movie audiences but with a gig like this that will soon change.

Frisbey is a French actress whose short resume consists of work primarily from her native country. Her previous film credits include La Fille du Puisatier, Bruc, Extase, La Premiere Etoile and Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique. She’s currently based in Paris and will be making her American debut in the established Pirates franchise. The cast of this film continues to grow and we can add Frisbey to the roster that includes Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and most recently Stephen Graham, Sam Claflin, and Max Irons.

The plot for the fourth film is based on the Tim Powers novel On Stranger Tides which centered on pirates and their search for the fountain of youth. Production on the film is scheduled to begin in June and they’ll shoot entirely on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles.

Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides will be directed by Rob Marshall and released in theaters on May 20, 2011.

What do you think of the latest addition to Pirates of the Caribbean? Is Frisbey a good choice?
