Producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal both appear in a new featurette for their upcoming film Predators. The video is a little over 3 minutes long and during that short period of time they manage to answer a few burning questions. For example, they finally explain what compelled them to hire the skinny guy from The Pianist to play the lead character. They also discuss why they changed the movie’s setting and the differences between this film and its predecessors.

In Predators, Royce is the central character and a military trained mercenary. He reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who have been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien creatures.

Royce is played by Oscar winner Adrien Brody who you wouldn’t necessarily peg as the action hero type. Rodriguez got him in the gym, gave him a cool haircut, handed him a gun, and viola made him an instant action star. According to the producer, he chose Brody and the rest of the cast because he was sick of seeing the same people do the same roles over and over again. He also wanted actors who could do more than recite dialogue while running away from explosions. You can’t knock him for having standards, we need more of that these days.
