Earlier today we told you about “Tonight Show” staple Kevin Eubank’s decision to leave the long running series after 18 years. He officially made the announcement during last night’s show and after the shock wore off people started to wonder who would replace him. How about Rickey Minor from “American Idol“?

According to Zap2it, Minor will take over as bandleader for “The Tonight Show” just days after Eubanks’ final episode on May 28th. He’s expected to report for duty on June 7th after a week of reruns, giving him some time to adjust to his new gig. Oddly enough, some people thought that Conan O’ Brien’s former music director Max Weinberg was up for the job but O’Brien’s new TBS show put that rumor to rest. Also, we don’t think anyone from Cone-Bone’s team would ever crossover to Jay Leno.

“It is a privilege for all of us to have Rickey on board,” “Tonight Show” executive producer Debbie Vickers says. “We couldn’t be more excited. The ‘Tonight Show’ has a long tradition of acclaimed musicians in this role, and it’s great to now include Rickey alongside Kevin and Branford [Marsalis].”

Now that Minor’s moving over to “The Tonight Show” who’s going to back the horrible vocals with music on “American Idol”?  According to NBC, he’ll still be allowed to do consulting on the show but other than that they didn’t clarify if he’d appear on both.

What do you think of Rickey Minor replacing Kevin Eubanks on The Tonight Show? Is he the right choice?
