Universal just released a behind the scenes featurette for Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe‘s latest collaboration Robin Hood. Even though the story of the vigilante archer has been beaten to death we can’t ignore the ridiculously talented cast in this film. Besides Crowe, it stars fellow Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and William Hurt along with Mark Strong, Matthew McFayden, and Max von Sydow (you know, the guy who played Father Merrin in The Exorcist?).
Robin Hood tells the story of an expert archer who was a devout servant of King Richard and his fight against the French. When Richard dies Robin visits Nottingham and sees first hand the corruption of its government and the suffering of its people. He also falls for the spirited Maid Marion, a woman who is very skeptical of his intentions. In an attempt to gain her trust he puts together a rag tag group of mercenaries who help shift the balance of power from the rich to the poor.
In the featurette several of the film’s co-stars speak about Robin Hood’s origins and what it is that drives him to do what he does. According to Scott, Robin is motivated when he sees the lack of fairness being distributed in Nottingham and it’s in his nature to step up. From our stand point, we won’t turn our heads when given the opportunity to watch Russell Crowe shoot arrows while wearing a pair of leather pants. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s sporting the same haircut he had in Gladiator, which equals instant nostalgia.
What do you think of the Robin Hood featurette? What do you think of Scott’s take on the story?
