Arrested Development fans are like a pack of rabid dogs who won’t go down without a fight. When Fox canceled the show we raced to our local retailers to pick up all three seasons on DVD and when word spread that a movie was in development we were all over it. For the past four years we’ve been hoping, and praying, and wishing that our favorite dysfunctional family would grace us with their presence one more time. For a while it seemed like a real possibility until we were dealt a death blow by one of the show’s stars David Cross.
On Arrested Development, Cross’s character Tobias was married into the Bluth clan and mostly known for his questionable sexuality and his identity as a “never-nude.” The actor and comedian has been keeping busy since the series’ cancellation with plenty of stand up and movie appearances, he even co-starred in Year One with fellow Development alum Michael Cera.
He along with every other cast member, continue to get asked when and if the movie will happen and according to him it probably won’t.
“(I)t’s not going to happen. Way too much time it’s been (since the show ended),” he told me. “I mean, there’s so many people involved. Everyone’s doing their own thing, you know. And everybody’s aged. It’s just not going to happen. I’m sure I speak for everybody when I say we’d love for it to happen, we’d love to work on it, but just I don’t think… not going to happen.”
What?! This isn’t something like the “Veronica Mars” movie where the series premise somewhat hinges of the character’s youth. Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat still have some baby fat left, they can play teens. Even with them aside, why do they have to be in the same time frame and age bracket? Arrested Development’s audience is fairly intelligent, we understand that people change.
It may be a hard pill to swallow but I will never, ever give up on this show becoming a movie until Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Jeffrey Tambor themselves tell me to. Until then I’ll be in my corner shaking from side to side in denial.
What do you think about Cross’ views on the Arrested Development movie? Could it still happen?
