Most fans of the comic book Captain America are still recovering from the news that Chris Evans aka Johnny Storm has been hired to play the hero. At this weekend’s WonderCon, he attended the panel for his new film The Losers and gave his first semi-interview regarding his coveted role as Steve Rogers.

Evans appeared on stage with the rest of his Losers cast to discuss the DC Comics adaptation that will hit theaters later this month but did he really think he would get out of answering some questions about Cap? WonderCon is filled with comic geeks and they drilled him about his new responsibility as the leader of the Avengers and they wanted answers. When he spoke about the character he gave a lot of generalities and admitted that even though he’s not a big comic book reader (isn’t that what they all say?), he really likes the character.

“I don’t know, I really don’t know,” Evans stammered. “I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now, and it’s a fun character. Even if it wasn’t a comic book, I think just the story of Steve Rogers is great; he’s a great guy. Even if it was just a script about anybody, I would probably want to do it. So it wasn’t necessarily about the comic itself. It’s just he’s a great character, a great character to play. It just so happens to be a comic book, and that’s really where I’m coming from.”

I want to see this script that he’s so fond of. The First Avenger: Captain America makes me very nervous with his casting and the direction of Joe Johnston. It also doesn’t help that Emily Blunt declined to co-star as his love interest in the film which is another bad sign. Either she has a grudge against Johnston (she worked with him on The Wolfman) or the script is complete garbage.

I’m still waiting for the supporting cast to round itself out, maybe then I’ll see a glimmer of hope that will save me from all this doubt.

What do you think of Chris Evans casting as Captain America? Do you think it was a good choice?
