The name Alex Pettyfer might not ring a bell to you now but the 19 year old just landed the role of a lifetime. According to Variety, the British actor will star in the highly anticipated film, I Am Number Four. The feature will be produced by DreamWorks, Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay, and directed by D.J. Caruso, therefore his casting in this movie is a big deal.

The story for I Am Number Four centers on a group of nine earthbound aliens who escaped their home planet just before it was annihilated by a rival species. Hiding out on Earth, the title character disguises himself as a human high schooler, only to discover he is still being hunted by his planet’s enemy. The film’s screenplay was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and is based on the book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes.

Before Pettyfer makes his mark in the world of sci-fi, he’ll have to tackle romance in the upcoming CBS Studios film, Beastly. It’s a modern adaptation of the classic, Beauty and the Beast. He stars as the formerly gorgeous, currently scarred young man, while Vanessa Hudgens plays his love interest.

The actor’s resume isn’t extremely long, and I’ve never seen any of his work so I can’t really judge whether or not he’s good enough for this part. But there are plenty of strong creative forces behind the film, who might be able to compensate where he’s lacking. If he’s set as the title character, I’m looking forward to seeing who they’ll get to play the supporting roles.

Also, this news broke weeks ago over at FilmDrunk but the trades are just now confirming it.
