Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody has a new gig and it will reunite her with the producers from the critically acclaimed film, Juno. The creative partners from the 2007 feature will join her on Young Adult, Cody’s latest screenplay that was recently optioned by Mandate Pictures.
Like Juno, Young Adult will be a comedy but it will have a “strong dramatic backbone.” Cody will produce the film alongside Academy Award nominated producers Mason Novick, and Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith of Mr. Mudd Productions. The storyline will center on “a thirtysomething, divorced, young-adult fiction writer in Minneapolis who returns to her hometown to chase the ex-boyfriend that got away — who’s now married with a kid.”
Young Adult is just one of the many projects that Cody has in development, she’s currently working on an adaptation of The Taming of The Shrew at Paramount, and Sweet Valley High at Universal. It seems like she can’t stay away from any property that deals with awkward teen angst, or awkward middle aged women behaving badly.
On a side note, one of the executive producers for Young Adult will be John Malkovich, who’s part of Mr. Mudd Productions. Young Adult may have most of the ingredients of Juno, but it’s missing the awesome direction of Jason Reitman, and the hilarious cast led by Ellen Page. Will we unfortunately have another Jennifer’s Body on our hands? I hope not!
What do you think of Diablo Cody taking on Young Adult? Do you think she can repeat Juno’s success?
