Over the past couple of week’s we’ve been trying to figure out who will play the title character in Joe Johnston’s Captain America movie. The process has been slow, tedious, and for the most part unrewarding, but here’s some good news. According to THR, Hugo Weaving is in negotiations to star as the film’s villain, Red Skull.

The trade claims that the Australian actor who’s had his fair share of action roles over the years, is the front runner to play the tinted bad guy. Red Skull is Captain America’s arch enemy and has been since 1941 “when he engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler’s right-hand man. In his final battle with the superhero, he was buried under the rubble of a bombed building but — as would occur later with Captain America — fell into a state of suspended animation.”

Red Skull also made an appearance in the 1990 live action film Captain America, which was a low budget production in every sense of the word. It would be easy for Johnston and company to improve on that “masterpiece.” The negotiation process for Weaving is still in the critical stage because like the guy who’ll be cast as the Captain, he will be required to sign on for multiple films. This is a major commitment for any actor, veteran or novice.

If Weaving does take on the role it will reunite him with Johnston whom he previously worked with in last month’s The Wolfman. Playing Red Skull will be a daunting task but Weaving can handle it. He has those facial features that can pull off that emaciated Red Skull look. Plus, his voice can be quite terrifying and most importantly he’s a good actor. He’s got my vote.

Do you think Weaving could make a good Red Skull? Who do you think should play the villain?
