The winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress goes to Mo’Nique for her raw and powerful performance in Precious. Like Christoph Waltz, she’s managed to sweep every major film award in this category and has topped off a winning year with the big one. She received a standing ovation as she approached the stage and thanked the Academy for paying attention to the performance and not the politics. She also went on to thank Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry stating “because you touched it, the whole world saw it.”

The nominees for Best Supporting Actress were:

Penelope Cruz – Nine – Nine details the effort made by world-class filmmaker Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) in realizing his latest cinematic vision while simultaneously balancing his relationships with the many passionate and influential women in his life, including his mistress, Carla (Penélope Cruz), and wife, Luisa (Marion Cotillard).

Vera Farmiga – Up in the Air - The story centers on a corporate downsizing expert (George Clooney) who travels all over the US in pursuit of more opportunities to fire people. As he approaches the 10-million frequent flyer miles milestone and meets the frequent-flying woman of his dreams (Vera Farmiga), his cherished lifestyle is threatened as his company wants to move him to headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska.

Maggie Gyllenhaal – Crazy Heart - The story centers around a washed up, hard-living country music singer, Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) who’s had far too many years on the road. Playing long ago #1 hits in beer joints and bowling alleys, he meets Jean (Maggie Gyllenhal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician – and inspires Blake’s turn of redemption.

Anna Kendrick – Up in the Air – The story centers on a corporate downsizing expert (George Clooney) who travels all over the US in pursuit of more opportunities to fire people. As he approaches the 10-million frequent flyer miles milestone and meets the frequent-flying woman of his dreams (Vera Farmiga), his cherished lifestyle is threatened as his company wants to move him to headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mo’Nique – Precious - (Based on the novel Push by Sapphire) Precious is set in Harlem. The story centers around an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child, who is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes that her life can head in a new direction.

    Monique hit that performance out of the ball park. She made you hate her character. Congratulations Hollywood finally rewarded a performance instead of a personality.
