What is the world coming to? Charles Roven helped produce one of the best films of 2008 and now he wants to adapt a campy sixties TV show? According to Variety, Roven along with Richard Suckle will produce a feature film version of Gilligan’s Island via their Atlas Entertainment banner. They plan to put a contemporary spin on the old school classic.

Gilligan’s Island won’t be your run of the mill remake, because the show’s creator Sherwood Schwartz is on board as an executive producer. Brad Copeland will write the screenplay and they already have an idea of who they want to star as Gilligan. Schwartz brought up Michael Cera as a possible candidate for the bumbling castaway and Beyonce as the too glamorous to be on an island Ginger.

Other than that speculation there’s no definite casting news to break at the moment. Even though Cera would fit the bill, his shtick is getting a little old. We need to see him in something new. According to the trades, the producers are looking to start production sometime next year, but they don’t plan on scouting a director until the casting and screenplay has been completed.

According to Roven, “We think it’s going to be a great story to transport these cultural icons to the modern day.” The original Gilligan’s Island aired from 1964 to 1967, and featured a host of off the wall characters. Besides Gilligan, there was the Skipper, the millionaire and his wife, Mary Ann, the Professor, and of course Ginger. Who do you think should play each role?
