A lot of fans are up in arms about the big screen adaptation of the eighties TV show 21 Jump Street. It made Johnny Depp a household name and now the film version is being spearheaded by, Jonah Hill. The idea of Hill tackling this project may leave you shaking in your boots but there may be a silver lining here. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Depp himself discussed the film and the possibility of making a cameo as his old alter ego Tom Hanson.

21 Jump Street was one of the first hits to come off the newly formed Fox Network in its infant stages. It centered on a group of young cops who used their baby faces to infiltrate juvenile crime organizations. They typically went undercover as teenagers and college students to get close to the underage sources of various crimes. The film will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller who are best known for last year’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

The film is in development over at Sony, and will be written and produced by Jonah Hill. When asked about the possibility of appearing in the film version of the series, Depp seemed humorously intrigued.

“I’m hoping they’ll let me do a cameo,” Depp said with a laugh. “Someone will say, ‘Whatever happened to Tom Hanson?’ and they’ll find me somewhere hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in my underpants.”

That actually sounds like something the actor would do. Depp doesn’t take himself too seriously and a Hanson cameo in this film would be well worth my price of admission. Who knows what will happen, the actor has aged gracefully over the past two decades. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if he was still doing the undercover teenager thing?
