Anthony Hopkins has signed on for a new gig and it’s a supernatural thriller called The Rite. The film is based on a novel by American author Matt Baglio, which drew from real life events. The veteran actor will take on the role of a priest whose exorcism expertise isn’t really age-old, but rather unusual.

The original story centers around a disappointed American seminary student who attends an exorcism school (where Hopkins will act as priest) at the Vatican. In the end, the student finds his faith through demonic encounters. It’s yet to be known who will star opposite Hopkins as the ‘American seminary student.’

At the helm will be Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom, whose last film 1408 (also novel-based) starred John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. The Swedish director seems to have some knowledge on how to make a successful adaptation (up until Inglourious Basterds, 1408 was the Weinstein’s only box office hit), and casting Hopkins is a step in the right direction.

Hopkins, known for his role as cannibalistic serial killer in The Silence of the Lambs, couldn’t be more perfect for this part. The Oscar winner is currently starring in Joe Johnson’s horror send up to the classic 1940′s film The Wolfman.

What do you think of Hopkins’ latest role?
