Captain America Casting: Krasinski, Vogel, Porter…

We previously wrote a post about the ongoing casting process for Joe Johnston’s take on The First Avenger: Captain America. It seriously seems like this role has been the hardest to cast out of all the Avengers characters. At this point in the game, it’s on the same level as The Hobbit when it comes to finding the right actor to play the title character. Over at THR, they’ve released a recent list of actors who’ve all auditioned and are moving along through the testing process.

The first name that I saw on the list that took me by surprise was John Krasinski from “The Office.” In no shape or form am I trying to diminish his talent but seeing him as Steve Rogers just seems awkward. Apparently Marvel has been conducting a series of screen tests with a wide range of actors to see if they have what it takes to lead the super powered team known as The Avengers.

They’ve listed several actors as contenders for the part who’ve moved forward from the preliminary round of auditions. The actors in question have either tested or are expected to screen test later this week and next at Marvel’s Manhattan Beach headquarters. The men moving on include Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger, Scott Porter, and Mike Vogel. This means that favorites Cam Gigandet and Ryan McPartlin didn’t make the cut. We even heard that Chace Crawford was in talks for the role, and Tron Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund was also interested but negotiations fell through.

Now, lets discuss the group of men who’ve made it this far shall we? First off all, Krasinski just doesn’t have the serious take charge attitude that Rogers needs. Michael Cassidy has already had a run on “Smallville” and tested for Superman in the past, so he’s no stranger to this genre. He and Patrick Flueger from “The 4400” are both 25, while Porter (“Friday Night Lights“) and Vogel are both 30.

The only reason I bring up their ages is because we’re going to need someone who can realistically take charge of a group of older more impeding actors ie. Robert Downey Jr and Chris Hemsworth who’s 6’3 and will be playing a Norse god for crying out loud. That’s the selling point for me. If I can’t visualize them standing in front of those guys when the going gets tough we’re going to have a problem.

What do you think of the Captain America shortlist? Who do you think should take on the role?

I am disappointed with all of the guys they chose to cast.

None of those actors scream Cap.
If I had to pick it would be Alexander Skarsgård. He WOWed me in Generation Kill

I like Mark Valley, who's currently on Fox's show Human Target. He might just have the look and charisma to pull off Cap.

If Cam Gigandet does not make the list, then my interest in this movie comes to a screeching halt now!

    Cam is hotter than fire.

All I know is that if Captain America is as bad as Joe Johnston's Wolfman then it won't matter who he casts. For pete's sake, he casted Benicio del Toro as an Englishman raised in America.

I like John Krasinski. Anyone can bulk up, so his beanpole-ness is not a problem, nor is it with anyone on this list. but what i like most about Krasinski is that he kind of has that All American, Normal Rockwell illustration look to him. dopey ears and all. I think this would be a great angle for the character. better than all the pretty boys in the mix anyway. start out as some regular American guy and then super soldier project happens and BAM! All American Guy with Huge Muscles

I have avidly followed the casting process for Cap and I am very disapointed.Mark Valley would have been ideal,Matt Damon or Max Martini credible.Instead we have proof that Joe Johnston does not take the source material seriously and this movie is going to be terrible.I have come to the conclusion that Ironman,The Dark Knight, and Batman Begins are atypical for the genre. All the fan boys who railed against the idea of casting Will Smith,Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson are quiet at the idea of John Krasinski and the rest of this lightweight comedy brigade.I guess it's time to start looking forward to the Luke Cage movie.
