Ian McShane is Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides!
By Krystal Clark
Why are we not surprised that veteran actor Ian McShane has landed one of the most coveted roles in the upcoming film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides? According to THR, he’s in negotiations to star as the infamous Blackbeard in the fourth film opposite Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be directed by Rob Marshall, and already has Depp and Oscar winner Penelope Cruz set to co-star. McShane is in talks to play Blackbeard, “whose real name was Edward Teach — who piloted the ship Queen Anne’s Revenge.” Details surrounding the film’s plot are still under wraps but it will have something to do with the Fountain of Youth.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is scheduled for release on May 20, 2011, which means production on the film should start some time later this year. Even though Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will be missing this time around, it looks like Disney has found a way to make this film work without them. McShane has been in the business for over 40 years, but gained mass acclaim when he starred as the cruel brothel owner on the HBO series, “Deadwood.”
What do you think of McShane joining the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides? Do you think he’ll be a great addition to the film?

Seeing as 'Pirates' 4 is going to suck, as far as I can see, this will only be an inspired choice if they let him swear up a fucking storm like he did on Deadwood. Otherwise, it's just a waste. Ian McShane is a very talented actor with a fantastic voice, but honestly, as good as this choice seems to be, I just have no hope for the movie itself.

No super moody Orlando Bloom with his look-at-me stare and exhaustively dramatic acting? Look, I thought the same thing when I heard about a Pirates 4, but the fact that they're dropping the dead weight story line of Elizabeth and Will Turner, which fizzled out in the first movie, but instead will have all the swashbuckling fun of Depp, Nighy, Rush and now Ian McShane? Those actors were what made the movie, in my opinion, so I have high hopes for this venture.

More enthused about POTC4 now that we're getting some interesting players. I read "On Stranger Tides" and Ian seems more suited to a different ally pirate in the book. Ian has a mountain of talent, but he's not the mountain of a man Blackbeard was. But maybe his acting will overcome that aspect.
