Jeremy Renner may be up for an Academy Award this year for his performance in the The Hurt Locker but his next project won’t be as high brow. The actor is rumored to be in talks for a role in Peter Berg’s big screen adaptation of Battleship. You may have thought that film died, but it’s still going strong and could gain this talented actor as its lead.

According to a brief tidbit in the New York Times, Renner is in talks with Universal to star in Battleship along with a boatload of other projects. He was previously rumored to star as Hawkeye in the Avengers movie, but he quickly put that story to bed. Too bad we haven’t received such a speedy response to this Battleship speculation.

Renner has been confirmed to star opposite Ewan McGregor in a film called The Raven, which will be directed by James McTeigue. It’s a period thriller that gives “a fictional account of Edgar Allan Poe’s final five days as the joins a hunt for a serial killer inspired by his stories.”

That sounds interesting, but the Battleship movie raises a few red flags. If he does decide to take on a role in the movie he’ll be following in the footsteps of many others who’ve received Oscar recognition and starred in sh*tty projects afterwards. Does anyone need to be reminded of Halle Berry’s turn in Catwoman (shiver)?

Do you think Renner would be making the wrong move if he starred in Battleship?
