Has Hollywood lost its ever loving mind? It’s bad enough that they’ve fallen victim to the reboot, remake, and board game epidemic, but now they’re taking on new kind of toy. I’m talking about the Erector Set. Remember the old school construction game that was created to get young boys interested in building structures and their imaginations? According to Nikki Finke, they’re making a movie about it and it will be in 3D!
Over the past few days a lot of movie news has been coming out of the 2010 Toy Fair, one of them being an announcement from Meccano Toy Company. They’ve created an exclusive partnership with Helix Films to produce a 3D film based on their popular Erector Set toy brand. This is the first time that Meccano has licensed out their toys and besides this film, TV and video games are also planned for the future.
The details regarding the Erector Set movie are being kept under wraps but it’s being described as “a family fantasy/adventure”.
Steven-Charles Jaffe of Santa Monica-based Helix Films said, “We believe the iconic Erector brand offers generational appeal with global reach, providing a tremendous platform to create a thrilling film franchise that boys, girls and adults will all adore.”
When I was a kid I considered myself an equal opportunist when it came to toys. It didn’t matter if they were for boys or girls, if they were fun, I’d play with them but the Erector Set never had that fun factor. It was great if you wanted to take some serious time to sit down and create, but it wasn’t a fast fix. Here’s some background…
Invented in England by Frank Hornby in 1901, Meccano was conceived as a model toy construction system comprising re-usable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles and gears, with nuts and bolts to connect the pieces. The toy has sold under the “Erector Set” brand in the U.S. since 1913, and Meccano/Erector set toy products are currently sold in more than 80 countries.
Where will the 3D come into play here? Most importantly why will this be in 3D at all?
What do you think about the Erector Set becoming a movie? Were you a fan of the original toy?
