wolfman2 10 10 Poll: Who Played The Wolfman Best?

This weekend Benicio Del Toro will follow in the footsteps of a long line of actors by portraying a werewolf in a movie. The Oscar winner will star in a remake of the 1941 Universal classic, The Wolfman, a role that was originally portrayed by the legendary Lon Chaney Jr. Del Toro looks as if he was born to play the hairy creature, but he’s not the first to tackle the tortured beast. In honor of its recent popularity (thanks a lot New Moon), we want to know who you think makes the best wolfman?

Vote in our poll and let us know who should be named top dog…

Joe Johnston‘s take on the character is a throw back to the 1940′s version while the other candidates in our poll embody different versions of the wolf mythology. We’ve included the John Landis classic, An American Werewolf in London, Mike NicholsWolf, and of course, Chris WeitzThe Twilight Saga: New Moon. You’ll have five actors to choose from including del Toro, Chaney, David Naughton, Jack Nicholson, and Taylor Lautner. It seems weird putting Lautner in the same category with these guys, but we have to be fair.

I am still a big fan of the Wolf Man. I watched Del Toro and Lon Chaney Jr. Though the special effects are good in the new version, I think Del Toro failed to show the torment of the character. Lon Chaney did a much better job of Talbort as the confused and tormented guy who was bitten by the wolf. From the humanly quality to the animal instinct or change in character Chaney did a much better job. You got to know the character in the 1941 version. But, the effects are good in the new version and the Wolf character looks pretty much 1941.

It's always about story. If you don't have a story and characters to care about, who care's what happens to them and why.
Lon Chaney's version is still the most tormented. Maybe they were just better actors back then. Or maybe most people don't care about story. Just get to the blood and C.G.I. graphics as soon as you can.
The first ones are always better. Just watch the remake of A Nightmare on Elm St. and you'll know what I'm talking about.
