Didn’t Mr. and Mrs. Smith come out in theaters a mere 5 years ago? If so, why is Regency Enterprises, a mini-studio within 20th Century Fox, producing a prequel? Don’t worry, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be nowhere in sight, they know better. Instead, the film will feature two younger leads and it will go by the new title, Mr. and Mrs. Jones.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith centered on a married couple consisting of two top assassins hired by rival agencies to kill each other. The twist was that they had no idea their significant other was their target. Mr. and Mrs. Jones “will serve as an origin story about a similar but differently named couple, showing how a pair of twentysomething spies are set up as a fake married couple when they graduate agency training.” The film will be produced by award winning writer/producer Akiva Goldsman.
They stated in the New York Times article that the reason behind Hollywood’s reboot fever is the economy. “By ditching pricey talent but extending popular name-brand franchises, they get the best of both worlds: a title people know and like, with stars they can afford (i.e., Star Trek).” From an outsider’s perspective I can see why reboots, sequels, and prequel appear to be the way to go in order to assure some type of profit, but sooner or later audiences will get tired of it. They need to keep that in mind when it comes to these types of decisions, because this kind of targeting can also isolate viewers.
