McG is stepping away from the heavy action driven world of film to tackle a romantic comedy. According to THR, the director will helm This Means War, a rom-com that already has Bradley Cooper and Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon attached to star. This will be the director’s first venture into the genre, do you think he can handle it?
This Means War will center on two life long friends, who have been inseparable since childhood. They grow up and discover that they’ve both fallen in love with the same woman (Witherspoon), which causes their close bond to disintegrate and “their ensuing battle escalates to mammoth proportions, with New York City demolished in their wake.” Cooper will play one of the friends, while the other has yet to be cast.
This Means War has been at 20th Century Fox, unproduced since the script was picked up back in 1998. At the time it went through its share of producers and stars, but they’ve finally nailed down the right combination of people. Directors who were previously up for gig include, Gore Verbinski and at one point Martin Lawrence was attached to star.
Cooper and Witherspoon could make a great onscreen couple, but the problem is finding another actor who has good chemistry with them. All the guys from The Hangover are automatically excluded, especially Justin Bartha since he’s already starred opposite Cooper in two films. We need some new blood, but who could it be?
What do you think of McG taking on a romantic comedy? Do you think he can pull it off? Who should be cast as Cooper’s best friend?
